Sweet & Sour Pork

Servings 4 people

Ingredients

Pork

  • 450 g pork leg steak
  • 2 tbsp cornflour
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ½ tsp white pepper or black pepper
  • ½ tsp Chinese five-spice

Vegetables

  • 1 red pepper chunky pieces
  • 1 green pepper chunky pieces
  • 1 small onion large chunks
  • 2 cloves garlic chopped
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 1 small carrot thin slices
  • 1 handful pineapple chunks

Sweet & Sour Sauce

  • 3 tbsp ketchup
  • 2 tbsp rice vinegar or cider vinegar
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 120 ml water
  • 1 tsp cornflour to thicken

Instructions

Prepare the pork

  • Slice the pork into 2–3 cm chunks.
  • Toss with cornflour, salt, pepper and Five Spice. This light coating gives a silky Chinese-style texture.
  • You can do this a few hours ahead

Brown the pork

  • Heat 2–3 tbsp oil in a wok or frying pan.
  • Fry pork in batches on high heat 3–4 minutes until browned.
  • Remove and set aside.

Cook vegetables

  • In the same pan add: onion
  • Stir-fry 2–3 minutes.
  • Then add peppers and carrot
  • Stir-fry 2–3 minutes.
  • Add: garlic and ginger
  • Cook 30 seconds.

Make the sauce

  • Mix the sauce ingredients together.
  • Pour into the pan and bring to a simmer.
  • Add pineapple

Finish

  • Return pork to the pan.
  • Cook 2–3 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats everything.
